I have always been drawn to old and unique clothing, probably dating back to when I used to rummage through my grandmother’s closet and try on her fur coats; or when my aunt would return from an exotic location with a suitcase full of scarves and beautiful things. As an adult, this has translated into a mild passion for vintage shopping. I love the hunt. There really is nothing like the feeling of finding something old that fits into my modern wardrobe, in good condition, with a near perfect fit.
While visiting home I decided to check out the vintage selection for wedding gear. I was totally amazed by the packed selection of quality finds I came upon in downtown Belleville at the Boretski Gallery. The selection of vintage (think turn of the Century!) wedding gowns and dresses, was amplified by the large selection of wedding accessories: hats, pearls, handbags, gloves and remnants of weddings past. I also found some inspiring ideas for wedding decor – vases, linens, handkerchiefs, centrepieces, candleholders, etc.
Mostly I was inspired by the wedding garments themselves, which conjured ideas of how to best go about re-making some of the beautiful lace and beaded pieces into something desirable by today’s bride. Some of the dresses needed work, but most had the elements for that just-right vintage look!
